Stella by Violette Field Threads - Pattern Review

Friday, May 24, 2013

I absolute love Violette Field Patterns. I have made so many of them and I am excit,ed that they are releasing even more of their patterns in print this summer. I have been wanting to use Jennifer Paganelli's Claudia.

I also absolutely love all of her fabric and have been looking for the perfect dress to showcase the true beauty of her designs. A few weeks ago, Jennifer posted a picture of her Circa fabric in the Emmaline dress.

I instantly fell in love and could not stop thinking about this dress. The Emmaline dress has been made so many times in the store; I can not believe I did not put the two together. I instantly went to get the pattern. When I did, I saw the Stella and thought, “Huh...I have not seen this pattern made,” and I decided it was the perfect pattern for this fabric.

Stella is a very easy dress to make. Once cut out, it can be made fairly quickly. This is a great project for beginners and can be customized with different fabrics or just one fabric. I will definitely be making this dress again and again.

My only problem with the pattern is information provided telling you how much fabric to cut out. Violette Fields lists how much fabric you need for each part of the dress in case you want to use different types of fabrics. To figure out how much I needed for only one fabric I added up all of the yardage and once I cut it out I had a additional 5/8 yard. That is a lot of extra fabric. I do like having a little extra, so I can make a headband or matching purse; but, 5/8 is more than plenty. I wish the pattern recommended yardage with the idea you might use just one fabric. Also you may have noticed I did not include the sash. I did cut it out and I might add it later, but I decided the dress looked great without the sash.

My only recommendation is that you should use an invisible zipper. I made it with a regular zipper first to follow the instructions, and I hated how it looked. I do not like exposed zippers even just a little bit. Maybe I followed the directions incorrectly (I do that a lot with zippers because I like installing them my way). However, I did try to follow them. If you do not like using invisible zippers, then try a three step zipper technique to get the zipper teeth completely covered.

I love this pattern, I love this dress and I love this fabric. Braelyn wears an 18m in most patterns, and when she tried on this 2T, it was a little big. When she grows into it, I think it will look really pretty and crisp. Until then, I will be going to the daycare to get models.  Again Violette Field patterns run big. The 2T fit girls that wear 3T from the store.
